Metal is an element that has high heat conductivity, distinctive radiance and can be shaped easily. It can gain desired features by creating an alloy when mixed with itself. Therefore, it is highly preferred in numerous sectors.
Aside from that, metal has one huge disadvantage; corrosion. Corrosion or colloquially known as rusting is actually metal’s reaction with oxygen. Metals extracted from nature in their oxide forms in which is purified by high temperatures. Then, upon contact with oxygen, they tend to oxidate again to their original forms. Many metals easily fall to corrosion through chemical and electrochemical reactions. This effect is so huge that estimated figures shows says, 8.7 million tons of metal is rendered useless annually through corrosion in Turkey. This amount is approximitely one third of our steel production in 2010 and it leads to financial losses at the size of billion dollars, both locally and globally. Therefore, metal needs special anti corrosion chemicals, depending on where they are found. On top of that, corrosion does not only occur during usage. Metal’s reaction to oxygen can be made easier by exposing it to high temperatures, just as in casting process. This situation may cause unforseen quality losses. Therefore, in such processes, chemicals must be used to stop the reaction of metals with oxygen.
Beside, processes like welding or plating may spoil metal’s structure due to high temperature and if these processes are carried out without proper cleaning, the desired quality is also rarely achieved. Problems like reduced endurance or corrosion may arise during usage. Therefore, it is vital to use the right chemical for the right process.
